Choosing a Tile Saw and Your Tile Type
Factors to keep in mind when choosing a snap/ rail tile saw -
Most of these saws are rated by the size of tile they are capable of cutting, therefore make sure you know the rating system, so you can purchase the right saw. It is also important to remember that snaps won't always be even due to the fact you are working manually. In many instances this won't matter, since the cut edge will be placed against a baseboard or wall. These cutters can't produce specialty cuts, and also remember they won't work on stone or other thicker tile materials you are going to be working with.
Handheld wet tile saws -
These use a diamond, powder coated cutting wheel blade to get the job done, similarly to how a circular saw is used. These saws are great for different jobs, and tend to be able to make specialty cuts, allowing you to use them for larger, or commercial type jobs. When working with larger or heavier tiles, these saws may be a good choice to consider. They are good for:
- Touch up or finishing tasks.
- Remote job, as there are cordless models available.
If you are working on a larger job, and need something a little more powerful, this is the better choice over the snap/ rail cutter for your work.
Table Top Tile SawsOverhead and table top options -
There are also tile saws which can be used overhead, or on a table top. Depending on the types of tile you are working with, the size of the area you are working on, and the finish you require, these saws are also ones to consider when you are shopping for a new saw. They are powerful, they have various settings and speeds, and make cutting through thicker tiles easier to do than handheld tile saw models you can purchase.
Regardless of the tile saw you eventually choose to purchase, contractors, as well as individuals working on small DIY jobs at home, should be familiar with the various styles of saws which are available to them. It is important to consider the size of the job and type of tile you are working with. This not only helps you select the right tile saw, but also find the best price when you are ready to decide on the one for use at home or a job site.
